Extract from Pine Bluffs Gazette, 17 May 1956 Town Mayor to Dedicate Memorial At 12.00 noon today Mayor Hackenbush will dedicate the new memorial raised by the towns-people of Pine Bluffs in memory of local hero Gaylord Sullivan. Cook 1st Class Sullivan was killed whilst serving in Korea in 1952, the only casualty in that campaign from the Pine Bluffs area. The guest of honor at the dedication will be Seaman 1st Class Butch Sullivan who has returned on special leave from his ship for the occasion. Cook 1st Class Sullivan was killed when his ship the USS Daisy struck a mine in the South China Sea. He had been stuffing the Thanksgiving turkey in the ships galley at the time of the incident and was struck by a flying box of bananas. At the time the Captain of the Daisy said the loss of Gaylord had been a great pity, the only good news was that the turkey had survived. The Gazette understands that the turkey is not available to attend the dedication today. |
