Based on the GWR Tucker Street station in the city of Wells in the heart of Somerset this was the first layout of Alton Model Railway Group. The layout was constructed in the mid to late 1980s and then owned and operated by member Denis Stevens. Following Denis’ passing in 2016, the layout has returned to the Group, and is being updated, refurbished and extended. It is currently hoped for the layout to be available for bookings in 2019.
The track plan has been revised slightly from its original arrangement and the overall length reduced. Many of the features are close reproductions of the prototype but with so many variations extra elements were added to complete the fictional picture.
The setting is either Great Western in the 1930/40s or 1950s British Rail Western Region and everything is kept faithful to the periods described. The track-work is finer scale than standard ‘code 100 rail’, but by design we are able to operate all of the current ready-to-run rolling stock without modification. The layout is now operated by Digitrax DCC.
Size: 21ft x 5ft. Layout is self-supporting with its own lighting.
Welles is currently unavailable for booking whilst refurbishment takes place. It is hoped to be available for bookings in 2019.
